The Unknown Land

1.The Greenhouse Boy: This piece was heavily inspired by the film "The Odd Life of Timothy Green",  which is about a boy who grows from a bush his parents planted. I wanted to recreate that in my own way, and sort of personalize the idea of the film. The medium of this piece is a mix of Digital and Photography, the background being primarily photography with small touchups around the frame of the greenhouse. Something I learned from this piece is how crucial backlighting and consistent shadows are to the emotion and feel of an piece of art. I think I've improved own shadows drastically due to the experiments done on this piece.

2. Fabricated Humanity: This piece was inspired by the ongoing fallacy of a perfect human being. i wanted to simulate the feeling of wanting to look a different way, while also not being able to escape who you truly are. The medium of this piece is completely digital. One thing i learned from working on this project in the importance of distorted proportion, and how it can impact a pieces themes. I wanted to create a piece that was disproportionate, but was also balanced and made sense to some extent.

3. The Inferno of Michelangelo: This piece was a rendition of David's "Michelangelo", reimagined as a portrait. I wanted to create the feeling of pressure and heat, like the state was on fire in a way. I used warm colors to simulate fire, and lighting on the face to match. The medium of this piece is digital, with small pastel touchups around the out line of the piece. One thing i learned from this project is how to simulate an environment without using physical traits of the environment. This skill is still not fully developed, but I think I got a good start on learning it.

4. 7177: This piece was made in an attempt to display how people outside of society are often depicted, in a dramatic sort of way. I wanted to create a heavily disfigured person, who's face was draped in cloth and hidden away from the rest of the world, with large eyes to look in on the world, unseen to the naked eye. The medium of this piece is digital. Something I learned from this piece is how to apply heavy, dark shadows in a practical way.

5. Nighttime Visit

This piece is entirely digital, and based around the idea of sleep paralysis and having a "visit" during paralysis, as some do. I made this piece to reflect my own experience with sleep paralysis and other sleep related issues, and explored a sort of off putting perspective to further push the idea. the skeleton figure depicted is made up of crinkled paper, and has pencil lines outlining his face and body. One thing i learned while producing this piece was how to implement perspective into the mood or tone of the piece.

6. Dismembered Hand

This piece is digital as well, and shows a hand separated from the body, with the innards of it slipping away from the bone. This piece is pretty grizzly, but i wanted to make it to get a better understanding of muscle and bone location throughout the arm. I learned from this piece that spacing is highly necessary in a piece, and the location of each element is crucial to how the piece is perceived. I had trouble with the muscles and getting them in the correct location for them to make sense, but i think overall its a strong work.

7. Sad Fool

Completely digital, this piece is an attempt to show how someone so happy and full of like can reflect the exact opposite emotions in their solitude. This piece depicts a traditional medieval court jester crying in a dark room of sorts, with a single tear streaming down his face. I attempted a renaissance/ neoclassical style for this work, which i think was somewhat successful, and i think the color palette is strong for the emotion its trying to portray. Something i learned throughout the production of this piece is how to implement directional lighting onto a portrait, and how it can portray different emotions. I studied different pieces of media in order to fully understand how shadows effect the mood of an image.
